Lonnisa Skinner, WECHS Class of 2014
Associates of Science
Post WECHS Degrees: B.S. in Psychology from Fayetteville State University and currently in the second year of my M.A. Program in Industrial/Organizational Psychology at East Carolina University.

Top Achievements:
During my time on Fayetteville State University and East Carolina University campuses, I have held positions as a Research Assistant and Graduate Assistant, aiding faculty in conducting research and organizing some aspects of the undergraduate curriculum. I am currently working as a Graduate Assistant with ECU's STEPP Program (Supporting Transition and Education through Planning and Partnership), specifically, developing a Workforce Readiness curriculum and leading workshops to instill in students the skills that they will need in order to successfully navigate the workforce upon graduation.

What's Next:
After I graduate from my current program, I plan to further my education by pursuing my Doctorate in Occupational Health Psychology and hopefully find my place in the field focusing on Employee Training and Development, Employee Health and Stress, and Work/Family Conflict.

Lessons from WECHS/CFCC:
While attending WECHS and CFCC, I learned a lot about time-management and organization. The instructors helped me get a grasp on how to effectively prioritize my workload and not become overwhelmed even in the most stressful of times. To this day, I still apply the organizational and problem-solving skills that were suggested to me then. I also learned how to utilize my resources in order to reach goals that I have set for myself. This can range from seeking additional help in courses that I may struggle with, attending campus events, or simply being sure to visit information centers on campus to gather materials that I might find helpful for my plans down the road. I also learned to make connections by making conversation with my fellow classmates, interacting with my professors, becoming involved in organizations and events on campus in order to broaden my network. This began during my time at WECHS when I was encouraged to become involved with clubs on CFCC campus.

Advice to WECHS students: It can never hurt to plan ahead. This can be with something as short-term as planning your assignment schedule for the semester or as long-term as planning your academic future and into your career field. It may seem a bit stressful or overwhelming in the moment to think that far ahead but future you will really appreciate it when you have a set plan for yourself. Even when planning ahead, don't be afraid to re-visit your plans if necessary. I had a plan set for myself when I left WECHS that I ended up changing once I got into my undergraduate program because I learned of different opportunities and paths that I could take. Never stop learning! Whether it is in the subject of interest or in your life plans, you can never learn too much. Take advantage of opportunities. Go to conferences, get involved in clubs (fun and functional alike), and branch out. Not only will you gain skills and experience, but you can make connections that you can carry with you throughout life.
